Featured ceramic artist Gemma Smale is based in Essex and a recent graduate of Ceramic Design at Central Saint Martins. Specialising in wheel throwing, her work focuses on experimenting with hand-sourced materials to create a deeper connection between people and ceramic art through meaningful material stories.

By researching ceramic traditions and regional crafts, Gemma has explored ways to incorporate collected waste and local materials into her work. She is currently experimenting with items like ash, iron scraps from local blacksmiths, and natural clays. Her focus is on traditional wood firing techniques to produce unique, textured surfaces, aiming to reduce reliance on mined materials for decoration over time.
