FOUNDATIONS OF PAINTING - BASIC TECHNIQUES AND COLOUR THEORY

This 2 day course is perfect for beginners eager to explore the world of painting in a relaxed, creative environment. Your instructor will guide you through foundational techniques, helping you discover your unique style while experimenting with colours, textures, and brushwork.

Day 1 – 2.5hr – Learn to control your paint, palette and brush and begin your composition

Day 2 – 2.5hr – Work detail and depth into your composition and review skills

We provide flexibility in our classes so book your Day 1 and Day 2 separately

By the end of the course you will be able to confidently begin your first basic painting compositions using Acrylic.

No previous experience is needed and Day 1 is recommended — so just bring your curiosity and an open mind. Whether you’re looking to unwind after a busy day or ignite a new hobby. All materials are provided, so simply come as you are!

Day 1 : Introduction & Overview

Meet your instructor and fellow participants.

Basic Colour Theory

We’ll start by learning about the colour wheel, including primary, secondary, and tertiary colours.

Discover how to mix colours and understand complementary colours, which add vibrancy to your work.

Try experimenting with mixing colours on your palette and see what new shades you can create.

Brush Techniques & Practice

Explore different types of brushes and the unique strokes they make.

Learn techniques like dabbing, sweeping, blending, and layering.

Creating a Simple Composition

Looking at basic shapes we will draw and plan our painting.

Day 1 – Close and shop

Day 2 : Building Layers and Colour

We will then begin painting and starting develop the layers, textures, light and shadows and work with complimentary colours, revisiting skills from day 1 and applying it to the composition.

Look back and Sharing

Step back and observe your work from a distance to see the bigger picture.

Day 2 – Close and Shop

End of the course and visit the studio store for artists items, ceramics and more before heading off

What should I bring to the class?

For this class, you will not need to bring anything, however, please do wear warm clothes as the studio can get cold in the winter months.

Is coffee, tea and biscuits available?

Yes! we have a gorgeous selection of tea and coffee options for you during the class, and you are welcome to all the classic biscuits you want.

Can I take home what i've painted?

Yes! Absolutely, we will provide you wrapping paper and string for you to safely transport your pieces home
